FAQ for SAM-Joystick for Mac

(Use your BACK button to return to the page you came from)

How do I properly use the iMate adapter?

We are looking for an adapter to connect the PC SAM joystick to a USB port on a Imac!

My child bumps the buttons on her SAM Joystick. Do you have a fix?

The "double click" button stopped working about a month ago and now neither button works.

I have an iMac and can't read the floppies you sent with the SAM Joystick. Are
these files available for downloading by registered clients?

Can my switch be connected to the SAM Joystick?

Could you send me a SAM Joystick to try out?

I need a "T-bar" type device to make it easier for my student to grasp the Joystick handle.

I am setting up an iMac with one of your joysticks. The technician sent me an USB to ADB adapter (made by New Motion) to connect the joystick to the iMac. I have been having lots of problems getting it to work. I just tried 'my' imate adapter and the joystick is working perfectly. I just checked your website for the joystick and you say that the imate is required.

I have recently discovered that Don Johnston peripherals will not work
with this USB to ADB adapter--they will only work with the imate and Don
Johnston technicians have confirmed this with me. Is this also the case
with your peripherals?

Can you use the SAM-Joystick with any kind of program?

Is the SAM-Joystick a true mouse alternative?

As soon as I reinstalled SAM Joystick, my computer began acting strangely.

What do you charge to repair a SAM?

How do I properly use the iMate adapter?

First, you will need to install the iMate extensions.  The link to the extensions can be found at the bottom of the SAM-Trackball page on our CD or at our website.  Once installed, the extensions must be turned ON in both iMate Control and iMate USB Drivers.

When the computer is on, if you unplug the iMate and then plug it back in, you will receive an error message.  Do your connecting of iMate adapted devices while your computer is off.
--------------

We are looking for an adapter to connect the PC SAM joystick to a USB port on a Imac!

The Windows joystick that you have, and the laptop adapter, are *not* compatible with iMac.

You would need our SAM-Joystick for Mac, and the iMate adapter.

If everything is in good shape, we can trade straight across.

--------------

The "double click" button stopped working about a month ago and now neither button works.

This is the one with 3 red buttons on it, yes? (please confirm)  These buttons have never *not*
worked.  Are you sure they are have not been reset to do nothing (look in the SAM-Joystick control
panel, and make sure the joystick is being recognized and the buttons are set correctly).  You
should see a blinking joystick over the Apple, if the control panel is recognizing the joystick.
Also, make sure your Drag-Lock button is UP, as that is the source of most difficulties with
joysticks.
------------------

I have an iMac and can't read the floppies you sent with the SAM Joystick. Are
these files available for downloading by registered clients?

Sure.  You will need three files:

Our SAM-Joystick control panel, which you can get at
<http://www.rjcooper.com/wheels>, then scroll down and click on the
<Click Here to go to More Wheels Pages> link, then scroll down to the
Mac section, and grab both Mouse4Wheels! and SAM-Joystick control
panels.

You will also need the iMate driver, which you can grab at
<http://www.griffintechnology.com/imac/imate_driver.html>.

Any questions, call 949-582-2572 9-5 CA time.

All of these files now exist on our CD too.
------------------

Can my switch be connected to the SAM Joystick?

Yes. That is what the SAM stands for, Switch-Adapted Mouse device.
----------------

Could you send me a SAM Joystick to try out?

Unfortunately, is just not possible.  It would be a nightmare for us to try and keep track of
the hundreds of joysticks that would be 'floating' around out there, for
a $164 product (Dynavox can do it with an $8000 product, of course ;-)

But we do have a 30 day money back guarantee, and you can put it on your
credit card and return it within 30 days, or get reimbursed, or we can
credit your credit card once 'they' decide to pay for it.
-----------------

I need a "T-bar" type device to make it easier for my student to grasp the Joystick handle.

Just take the joystick to a hardware store or Home Depot (even better)
and go to the lawn sprinkler fittings section.  Look for the Funny Pipe
fittings.  There is a T that fits over our handle fitting.

We are not familiar with the adapter by New Motion.  But we do know that
our SAM-Joystick software works with the iMate and its drivers.

The iMate has been out for quite awhile so that is the one that most
vendors have experience with.
-----------------

Can you use the SAM-Joystick with any kind of program?

Yup :)
----------------

Is the SAM-Joystick a true mouse alternative?

Yup :)
----------------

As soon as I reinstalled SAM Joystick, my computer began acting strangely.

You had your Drag-Lock button on SAM-Joystick depressed.
-----------------

What do you charge to repair a SAM?

We charge a flat $55 for repair of any SAMs.  Include this email in the package, ship via UPS, and
write "R-207" on the outside.  You must include either a check or p.o. for $55.

FAQ for SAM-Joystick for Windows

(Use your BACK button to return to the page you came from)

My Cursor is 'drifting' all by itself

I've calibrated my joystick, but the calibration won't take.

I need help downloading and installing the Joystick to Mouse software.

What do you charge to repair a SAM?

We would like to use your Sam Joystick with a Dynovox.  The Dynavox has a "Joystick/serial port" which is the size of a regular serial port.  IS there an adaptor to plug
the SAM  into that port?

I need information on the joystick that you make for the Dynavox, and prices.

As soon as I reinstalled SAM, the machine began acting strangely (bell tones, blinking question mark on floppy disk icon instead of booting, and other joys).

My notebook (PC type) does not have a gameport, only a mouseport.

The software installs fine but the problem comes when trying to calibrate.

I have ordered a SAM joystick for Windows, and the computer that I have
does not have a 15 pin port.  It does have a sound card, but there is
not an external 15 pin port.

I need a "T-bar" type device to make it easier for my student to grasp the Joystick handle.

Can you use the SAM-Joystick with any kind of program?

Is the SAM-Joystick a true mouse alternative?

Could you send me a SAM Joystick to try out?

Can my switch be connected to the SAM Joystick?

I can not get the Joystick working on my computer because the plug will not stay in the port.  Any suggestions?

Can one of the buttons or an external switch be set to be a double click?

I have Windows 95 and received a "Windows cannot find BWCC.DLL" error when I was installing the Joystick to Mouse software.

My Cursor is 'drifting' all by itself

1) Open Joystick-to-Mouse Menu Options by clicking on Joystick-To-Mouse in the taskbar.
2) Use your tab/arrow keys to Stop Joystick.
3) Click on Calibrate, Windows Standard.  Read carefully and follow on-screen instructions.  When Windows asks you to move your joystick through its full range, push the stick all the way to the left, then go around the entire edge, clockwise, three times.
4) <OK> your way back to Joystick-to-Mouse Menu Options, click on Start Joystick.

That usually fixes cursor drift.  If it doesn't:

1) Open up Joystick-to-Mouse Menu Options.
2) Click on Program Options on left.
3) Enable Advanced Settings, then OK.
4) Click on Joystick button.
5) Move both sliders in upper right to middle.

I've calibrated my joystick, but the calibration won't take.

Don't forget to reboot your computer after the calibration. This will do the trick.

I need help downloading and installing the Joystick to Mouse software.

First create a Temporary folder in which to save the compressed download file. Set your monitor display to 256 colors.
Once the Joystick to Mouse software is downloaded into your Temp folder, double click on the compressed file. You
will need WinZip or some other decompression utility which will automatically expand the compressed file. You will
then see many files appear in your Temp folder. Now, double click on the SETUP.EXE file. Joystick to Mouse will
then be installed on your hard drive within it's own folder. You may then delete all expanded files in your Temp folder.
Go to Start | Programs | Joystick to Mouse | Joystick to Mouse  to run the program.

What do you charge to repair a SAM?

We charge a flat $55 for repair of any SAMs.  Include this email in the package, ship via UPS, and

We would like to use your Sam Joystick with a Dynovox.  The Dynavox has a "Joystick/serial port" which is the size of a regular serial port.  IS there an adaptor to plug
the SAM  into that port?

SAM-Joystick is a joystick that plugs into a joystick on a PC.  It does not plug into a serial port,
which is what the Dynavox has.  It also has a regular joystick port, but the two are not the same.

Penny & Giles makes a serial joystick that plugs into a serial port on a PC.

You may return the SAM-Joystick to us for full refund.

We do make a joystick for the Dynavox that plugs into the 9 pin joystick port.  The serial port is a
9 pin also but not a normal joystick port.
-----------------

I need information on the joystick that you make for the Dynavox, and prices.

It is $100 and you would simply refer to it as <Joystick for Dynavox>.  Which Dynavox do you have?
And please confirm that you have a serial port AND a joystick port, and they are not one and the
same on your unit.
------------------

As soon as I reinstalled SAM, the machine began acting strangely (bell tones, blinking question mark on floppy disk icon instead of booting, and other joys).

Our older SAM's have a locking button.  You had your Drag-Lock button on SAM-Joystick depressed.
-----------------

My notebook (PC type) does not have a gameport, only a mouseport.

The SAM Joystick requires a 15 pin game/joystick connector.
The only way around this is our Notebook  Joystick adapter PCMCIA card, $100.
---------------

The software installs fine but the problem comes when trying to calibrate.

Only way we've been able to clear up such matters is by talking with you on the phone, when you are
in front of the computer.  Please call 1-800-rjcooper  9-5 Pacific time.  Or give us a time/day when we
can call you.  The joystick might be defective, or you might be mis-calibrating (the #1 thing people do wrong with this product).
--------------

I have ordered a SAM joystick for Windows, and the computer that I have
does not have a 15 pin port.  It does have a sound card, but there is
not an external 15 pin port.

Simplest solution is to purchase a $15 game card from any computer store.

Unless you have a laptop and neglected to tell us that.  If you do, then
you would need our $100 joystick adapter.
--------------

I need a "T-bar" type device to make it easier for my student to grasp the Joystick handle.

Just take the joystick to a hardware store or Home Depot (even better)

Unfortunately, is just not possible.  It would be a nightmare for us to try and keep track of
the hundreds of joysticks that would be 'floating' around out there, for
a $174 product (Dynavox can do it with an $8000 product, of course ;-)

But we do have a 30 day money back guarantee, and you can put it on your
credit card and return it within 30 days, or get reimbursed, or we can
credit your credit card once 'they' decide to pay for it.
-----------------

Can my switch be connected to the SAM Joystick?

Yes. That is what the SAM stands for, Switch-Adapted Mouse device.
----------------

I can not get the Joystick working on my computer because the plug will not stay in the port.  Any suggestions?

We can provide you with another joystick that has a metal connector and
screws for affixing to the mating connector on your computer, for your
rare situation (we sell hundreds of these and we do run into rare
situations like your's, so we try to be prepared).
---------------

Can one of the buttons or an external switch be set to be a double click?

There should be no problem setting up any SAM-Joystick buttons to act as a double click. We have run across rare circumstances where there is an issue with the double click. If you run across this, please call us at 1-800-rjcooper.

If it's in Windows, and you just want her to be able to launch programs
from the desktop, then setup your desktop as a Web page, so each icon
responds to a single click! (bet you don't know how to do that ;-)

For Win95 and below, you can run Joystick to Mouse and click on Button Settings. For Button 2 click on the small triangle which will expand a list of choices. Click on 'Enter Key'. Click on 'OK' and 'OK'. Now you can hover over a folder and click once on button one and then a second time on button two. Your folder will now open. Do the same thing with program icons.
--------------

I have Windows 95 and received a "Windows cannot find BWCC.DLL" error when I was installing the Joystick to Mouse software.

In rare cases, this file becomes corrupted or erased. Call us at 1-800-rjcooper or email me at rjc@rjcooper.com and have him send you this file, either through email or snail mail.
